The fighter was in Houston taking part in a training mission for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The pilot ejected on the ground and received minor injuries, but was able to walk away.

The jet was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and continued to idle until it ran out of fuel in the afternoon, so an evacuation perimeter was established.

The pilot ejected on the ground

“I’m gonna punch out! Turn the engine off? But HOW? I only do this one weekend a month, you can’t expect me to remember everything. Get out? But it’s like 8 or 9 feet to the grass. And what if I get sucked into the intake? I already told you I don’t know how to turn the f*cking engine off!”

*EJECT*

Zero Altitude ejection systems are neat.

“Oklahoma”...

This was a vital piece of information that we Houstonians were missing yesterday. The event makes a bit more sense now.

Carry on.

I don’t know procedures for these things, but these questions are running through my mind as well.

Yeah, lots of respect for pilots and their training, but when some random shit goes down, I can’t imagine you’re thinking straight.

I’m pretty sure the emergency procedures aren’t

FIRE / SMOKE / FUMES

1. FUCK EVERYTHING. PUNCH OUT.

Not that I can say I would be either.

Possibly, but you have to remember that it was on a takeoff roll, so there’s not a lot of time to think when you’re nearing the end of the runway.

Solid point. In that case, props for at least pulling it back to idle. I can see how a quick shutdown might have been attempted-the finger lift on those throttles can be tricky.

So did the gear get torn off when it overran the runway, or was the plane actually airborne and wheels up when the fire started / was detected? If it was already airborne then cutting the engine to idle, belly flopping it on the grass and ejecting makes a lot of sense. For that matter depending on the location / apparent severity of the fire ejecting would be pretty high up on the priority list.

The pilot is probably an Airbus driver Monday-Friday, and thought the airplane would fly without him.

Seriously! Someone should come up with a computerized fly-by-wire system for fighter jets! /s

The lack of cross-wind confused him obviously.

Maybe seeing something other than barren wasteland factored into the confusion as well.
